Mack and Banjo

The sun shone brightly one morning in Boomtown while a little mouse named Mack slept sweetly in his bed.

A voice outside Mack's window whispered softly, "Mack?" but the little mouse slept on.
The voice tried again, a little louder this time, "Mack!"

Again, Mack didn't wake up. In fact, he slept on and on. And on and on and on until finally the voice outside shook him awake.

"MACK!" trumpeted the voice.

Mack's eyes opened wide.
He jumped out of his bed to go find the voice that had woken him up.

Mack ran right behind his mother busy making breakfast in the kitchen.

"It wasn't her voice that woke me up," thought Mack, and quickly went out the back door to the garden.

Banjo smiled and said to Mack, "Good morning. Do you want to go get some ice cream?"

"Of course!" said Mack. "Some delicious cheese ice cream sounds great! What flavour of ice cream will you have, Banjo?"

"Peanut. I always have peanut ice cream. That's my favourite. Let's go." And the friends set off to find their ice cream.

On the way, Mack decided to play a trick on his friend, and he went behind a tree to hide.
Banjo didn't notice his friend had stopped, and walked on in front of the tree.

Mack watched from behind the tree as a brown bag blew in front of Banjo, and Banjo followed the bag thinking that it was his friend Mack the Mouse.

Soon the wind lifted the bag up higher in the air, and Banjo watched what he thought was Mack fly off into the sky. "I don't think that's Mack," he said.

"But if that's not Mack, where did he go?" wondered Banjo.
Just then Banjo felt something pull his tail. He turned to see Mack smiling behind him.

"Why were you following that bag?" asked Mack.

"I thought it was you!" said Banjo. "Can we get that ice cream now?" he asked.

Mack said okay, and the friends set off again with Mack in front and Banjo following behind.

However, Banjo didn't see Mack turn right on Apple Street and Banjo kept going straight.

Banjo finally came to a stop in front of a brown furry dog that he thought was Mack. "Oh good!" Banjo exclaimed, "I thought I had lost you again!"

The brown furry dog didn't answer. Banjo thought Mack was being rude by not replying.
Banjo thought Mack was being even more rude when he walked away from him.

His feelings were hurt until he saw another brown furry animal walking towards him.

"Mack?" he asked.
"Banjo, what happened? Why didn't you follow me?" asked Mack.

"I guess I didn't see you," answered Banjo, looking confused.

"I think you need to see an eye doctor. Hold my tail this time," said Mack.

Banjo followed Mack into the eye doctor's office where Mack explained to the doctor what had happened that day.
The eye doctor said he could see Banjo right away, and Mack smiled at Banjo and told him they would go get ice cream as soon as he was finished.

The doctor told Banjo to look at the poster on the walls and read the letters out loud.

Banjo looked at the poster, but he couldn't see the letters very well at all.

Banjo squinted a little bit, and then he squinted really hard to try and read the letters, but he couldn't get past the very first line.

"T," he said to the doctor. "That's all I can see."

This made Banjo very sad and he looked down at the floor.

But the doctor told him not to worry, he had just the thing for Banjo. He put a pair of glasses over Banjo's eyes, hooking them behind his large elephant ears.

Banjo's face lit up, and his eyes opened wide. He could see!

Banjo called out, "Mack! I can see!" Banjo slipped the glasses off to compare the difference. Everything went blurry.

He then put the glasses back on and could see everything clearly.

"Hooray!" shouted Mack. "Now let's go get that ice cream!"

"Peanut ice cream for me, Mack. It's my favourite flavour," said Banjo.

"And cheese ice cream for me, Banjo. I can't wait!" said Mack. And the friends set off once more to find their ice cream, Banjo happily looking around at Boomtown for the first time with his new glasses.
